He studied to be an engineer, but later decided to make art full time. Using his engineering background, he made movable toys at first and eventually invented the mobile. Mobiles, called kinetic sculptures, are magical and ever-changing. In this class we will design and create our own mobiles using wire and abstract shapes. Students will assemble them so they are balanced and move in a pleasing way. Come create your own kinetic sculpture and see how it dances in the breeze!

Aborigine Bark Painting with Ann Rhinehardt

The Australian Aborigines use art as a way to communicate or tell stories just as many other primitive peoples have over the centuries. The Aborigines call their original folk tales and myths “dreamings”. One of the folk art forms that the Aborigines developed was to paint on tree bark using earth pigments: red, black, yellow and white. In this class, students will learn about traditional bark painting and then design their own. Using either brown paper or cardboard as “bark”, students will paint their own “dreaming”. Come and join us for a traditional art form from the Land Down Under!

Alternatives in Your Toolbox with Rachel Benner
Monday, July 28
Our creativity is limitless; our resources are not. This class will combine familiar objects and ideas in ways that will literally smash, slash, and trash the expectation of tools and technique. Starting with two large murals, the group will be able to let loose with a variety of mediums to create a masterpiece and make a mess. Next, we will examine typical objects, break them down and rebuild them into modern works of art. Then, after some cleanup, the students will be able to work as individuals and work with a familiar medium. However, using abstract tools with challenge the mind to take different paths and make new connections. These three activities will allow young artists to experiment with mediums, discover new uses for old techniques, and to make the most of their materials.
Unforgettable Figure Drawing with Rachel Benner
Tuesday, July 29
Before an artist can freely express a notion onto paper, they should always find a space to be free! This class will get young artists on their feet and having fun with games, music, dancing, and the fundamental basics of figure drawing (yay!). By playing games often used in the theatre and using messy, stress-free materials, inhibitions and tension will fall while confidence rises. After some speedy cleanup, students will be able to wiggle and giggle the stress from their person and their art as the pose for a group mural. Then the kids will race the clock with freehand sketch as the instructor tries her hand at modeling!
